Do This After Water Damage

When water damages happen, it’s never at a convenient time. Chances are it’s in the middle of a cold winter night or just after you return from a week-long vacation and suddenly find yourself with 5 inches of water in your basement.
Before we get into what steps need to be taken once you determine that you have a water damage on your hands, the most important thing you can do is a call a professional, IICRC certified restoration company such as SERVPRO of Dartmouth / New Bedford to restore the damage.
When you call a professional company, you get professional results. But if you hire subpar, expect subpar work.
Here are three main steps to take when you notice you have water damage:
- Shut the main water off.
This may seem pretty straightforward, but you’d be surprised at how overwhelmed people can get when they noticed flooding in their home or office. To prevent the damage from worsening, locate your main water valve and shut off the water.
2. Call an IICRC Certified restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Dartmouth / New Bedford.
When dealing with water damages, time is of the essence and we pride ourselves with being faster to any size disaster.
3. Don’t try to do-it-yourself.
As tempting as it may be to try to “fix-it” on your own, it can actually cause even more damage. Avoid opening windows, changing the temperature in the room, or even using a fan to dry up the water. These changes can have the opposite affect of drying the area. If a water damage isn’t properly dried it can lead to secondary damage such as mold and rotting.
While you may not be able control when a water damage occurs, you do have a say in what you’ll do about it as well as what company you choose to help. Regardless of who your insurance company recommends, it’s important to choose a company with a good reputation and one you can trust. It’s the kind of trust and reputation that SERVPRO of Dartmouth / New Bedford has built for over 30 years.
