Winter Weather Worries- Ice Dams- Padanaram, MA 02748

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Here in New England, winter weather can result in more issues than icy roads and snow removal. Temperatures here are known to consistently drop well below the 32 degree freezing point. This drop in temperature increases your risk for major disasters to occur at your residential or commercial property. There are two major winter weather disasters that SERVPRO of Dartmouth/New Bedford encounters far too often during these frigid frozen temperatures.

The first and probably most commonly known: Frozen Burst Pipes, typically caused by an extended or extreme freeze  the ruptured pipe may burst at the site of the ice blockage however it is typically caused by the backflow pressure created between the water source and the blockage.

Ice dams are another winter weather worry that we have frequent calls about during times of heavy snow and extreme cold. Ice dams occur when snow accumulation on a roof is heated by warm air exiting the home or business through the roof. The warm air melts a portion of the snow and the gutters build up with ice creating a dam for any additional melted to snow. When the water has nowhere to go it can back-flow under the roofs shingles and into the building’s interior. This can cause minimal to excessive water damage.
